Picnic at Hanging Rock is surely one of the most beautiful and iconic Australian films – an ethereal, eerie confection reminiscent of a Victorian-era Virgin Suicides. The mysterious story was written by Joan Lindsay in 1967, and transformed into a cinematic masterpiece by Peter Weir in 1975.
A true Australian classic – a box office success, and winning a BAFTA for the beautiful cinematography. Many also see the release of the film as the catalyst for a renaissance in Australian cinema.
Designers Nic Briand and Susien Chong of Sydney label Lover frequently name-check the film as an influence and inspiration for their feminine aesthetic.
