MELBOURNE —Dark wood, low lighting, equally low-slung leather couches or large communal tables. Journal is fittingly reminiscent of a library reading room – one where you can drink good espresso, a glass of red or a tumbler of sloe gin.
A canny selection of items adds interest to the space without overwhelming – pendant lights hang from the ceiling; tall, freestanding copper shelves guard the entrance, home to a gaggle of single freesias plonked in old bottles.
It’s busy, but not overwhelmingly so, and the menu is succinct. Toasted sandwiches with fillings comprised of a selection of European cured meats and good cheeses. Toasted crumpets and jam, bruschetta with simple toppings. One or two filled rolls, a soup, lasagne, counter pastries. Everything you need, nothing you don’t, and all in a warm, comfortable, bookish atmosphere – fitting, as the café backs onto the Council for Adult Education and provides a welcome hub for students and locals alike.
